Lil' Off Top? Salon Bookkeeper Accused Of Stealing

SANTA ANA (CBS) ― Officials in Orange County say a longtime bookkeeper for a Newport Beach hair salon stole more than $245,000 while working for the business.

Bethany Jane Brady, 43, of Newport Beach, is accused of stealing from her employers, says Orange County District Attorney spokesperson Farrah Emami.

The DA's office says Brady allegedly used the Hampton Salon's checking account to pay her utility bills from October 2006 to August 2009.

Emami says in 2007, Brady also opened a PayPal account under her name using the salon's checking account.

Brady is also accused of shifting money from that checking account into her PayPal account. She reportedly used her PayPal credit card to pay for personal expenses, Emami said.

Newport Beach police arrested Brady Thursday.

She was charged Friday with grand theft, identity theft, computer access fraud and money laundering with a sentencing enhancement for causing losses more than $200,000.

If convicted on all counts, Brady faces up to seven years in prison.

Brady is being held on $250,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned Monday.

Brady was reportedly retained to do the salon's books for $250 a month.
