Arrest Made In 'Sparking Brakes' Case
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
Police Friday evening announced an arrest in the so-called "Sparking Brakes" case.
A suspect was taken into custody about noon Friday, according to officials.
Police say Carlos Mares, 32, of Los Angeles was arrested by LAPD detectives.
They say Mares would somehow convince female drivers in the Mid City area that they were having car trouble -- usually sparking brakes -- and after they pulled over, they alleged that he sexually assaulted them.
They say he committed no rapes, at least none that have been reported, but they were concerned that his behavior was getting increasingly more aggressive.
He is alleged to have groped or fondled at least six women. Detectives think there may be more victims out there and they asked them to call (213) 473-0447 during business hours. Or they asked possible victims to call 1-877-LAPD-24-7 (527-3247) at all other times.
