A 19-year-old former Washington Preparatory High School football player was wounded after a game against University High in an on-campus shooting Friday that also left a 12-year-old girl with wounds to her chest and a leg.
The victims were shot multiple times around 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the school in Athens, an unincorporated area near South Los Angeles, said Sgt. Chris Bergner of the Lennox Sheriff's station.
The 19-year-old, described as a former star on Washington's football team who now plays for El Camino College, was wounded in the pelvis, buttocks and lower body, while the girl was shot in the chest and left leg, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Both victims were hospitalized in stable condition and are expected to survive, ABC7 reported.
At least one gunman was seen running south from the school. The newspaper reported that school police and sheriff's deputies shut down several blocks around the school to search nearby apartments. The search came up empty and was finally called off around 9 p.m.
The trouble stemmed from some roughhousing between the wounded male teen and several other young men, The Times reported.
Four people got into an argument inside the school gymnasium and gunshots were fired, Bergner said.
The victims were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition, Bergner said.
An investigation was pending and it was unclear whether any gang activity contributed to the violence.
The shooting left a Washington Preparatory assistant principal in tears "because they work so hard for the students," Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte, the school board member who represents the area, told The Times.
Counselors are typically sent to a school on the first day of classes following a shooting in an attempt to assist students and additional security is usually provided as a precaution, Susan Cox, a communications officer with the Los Angeles Unified School District, told City News Service.
