A gunman fatally shot a 21-year-old man, just after the victim left his South Los Angeles home and began walking down a sidewalk, authorities said.

The gang-related assault occurred about 11:30 p.m. Saturday near 98th Street and McKinley Avenue, said Los Angeles police spokesperson Kate Lopez.

The gunman walked up the victim and shot him several times, and paramedics took the 21-year-old man to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Lopez said.

His name was not immediately released.
