2 Young Men Shot, Killer On The Loose
LOS ANGELES
Two college students were shot and killed Friday, and police have discovered neither a suspect, nor a motive.
Clifton Hibbert Jr., 22, of Santa Monica, and Kenneth Patterson Jr., 23, of Los Angeles, died in the roughly 1:50 a.m. shooting Friday near Figueroa Street and 43rd Street, according to police and Lt. Joe Bale of the coroner's office.
The murders occurred in an area of frequent drug deals, shootings and street crimes less than a mile from the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Hibbert's father reported that both young men were in college and that neither was involved in gangs.
"If we don't come out and say something -- if we keep hush hush -- these people are going to take over our community," Clifton Hibbert Sr. said.
The younger Hibbert attended Cal State Northridge.
Detectives questioned two friends who said they heard gunfire, but did not see the shooters, Sgt. Adrian Moody of the Southwest Station said.
"The witnesses only heard gunshots and ran back, and their friends were dead already," Moody said Friday. "There were no suspect descriptions. No weapons were recovered at the scene."
