$6M Settlement Reached In Farmers Market Crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Santa Monica will pay $6 million to settle the last lawsuits stemming from a deadly accident in which an elderly motorist plowed into a farmers market crowd.

The city announced Wednesday that it reached an agreement ending two injury and wrongful-death lawsuits. They were filed by families of three people who died and one who was hurt in July 2003 when an 86-year-old man plowed into the street market.

The crash killed 10 people and injured more than 70.

Altogether, Santa Monica has agreed to pay $21 million to settle dozens of suits stemming from the crash.

Driver George Weller was convicted of manslaughter and placed on probation.
