'Flat-Foots' No More-Cops Ride Segways At LAX

Test Program Measures Effectiveness Of The Space-Age Scooters

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― The tired feet Los Angeles Police officers may be getting a break soon.  The LAX Police force Tuesday began evaluating the effectiveness the effectiveness of Segway Personal Transporters in patrol operations.

During the airport's busiest season, officers will evaluate the four Segways throught he end of the year, said Airport Police Chief George Centeno.

"We are always exploring innovative ways to increase our officers' effectiveness and interaction with the passenger community we serve," Centeno said.

"Anything that increases our motility and visibility -- while maintaining that close contact with the public -- is a plus," he said.

The Segways will be used by various personnel, including Traffic Unit supervisors, who will increase the "frequency and quality of field contacts" with their employees around the central terminal area, Centeno said.

Patrol Services Section personnel will also use the Segways around terminal gates, passenger arrival and baggage claim areas, and to patrol "problem areas" as needed, Centeno said.
