Schools across the state are slashing bus service for thousands of California students because of budget shortfalls and high fuel prices.
Some parents worry that pushing more kids to bike, walk or drive to school may put lives at risk. Others are rushing to organize carpools efore the school year begins.
Fewer than 15 percent of the state's 6.3 million students rode school buses in 2007.
It costs about $1,400 a year to provide bus service to a student in an urban district, and more than $900 for rural students.
