A massive storm system, reaching as far north as Reno in Nevada and as far south as Orange County, is dumping snow and rain across the state.

Howling winds, driving rain and heavy snow are pummeling California, leaving more than a million people without power and forcing the evacuation of 1,000 homes in Orange County. Airlines delayed or canceled flights in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay area as winds gusted to 80 miles per hour. Mandatory evacuations were ordered for about 1,000 homes in four Orange County canyons scorched by wildfires last fall.
Highways from Sacramento to San Francisco are closed because of debris or toppled tractor-trailers blocking lanes, and local roads are flooded.
The state opened its emergency operations center Friday to coordinate storm response and Governor Schwarzenegger says he has spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff by phone.
