Actor Rob Lowe and his wife Sheryl have sued their children's former nanny, alleging she disclosed details about her employment with them and lied about the conditions under which she worked.
The couple filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday against Laura Boyce on allegations of defamation, breach of contract, intentional infliction of emotional distress and intentional misrepresentation. They are asking for unspecified general and punitive damages.
Neither Boyce nor a representative were immediately available for comment.
Earlier on Monday, Rob Lowe blogged on The Huffington Post Web site about what the 44-year-old actor called a "household betrayal."
"The effect of her betrayal reaches far beyond possibly marring the
Lowes' image in the public eye, but has already caused a tremendous amount of harm to the entire family," the lawsuit states.
"The Lowes bring this suit to set the record straight and to take a
stand against all those who, by betraying the confidences of those they work for, celebrity or not, seek to capitalize on their positions for their own
financial benefit and to the emotional and financial detriment of their employers."
According to the suit, Boyce worked for the Lowes during the last year
as a nanny to their two children, Matthew and John Owen, and signed a confidentiality agreement like every other Lowe employee.
Boyce developed a close relationship with the Lowe family, who live in
Santa Barbara County, and talked freely about her personal life with Sheryl, the suit states.
Boyce did not report to work last November, prompting the Lowes to file
a missing person's report, their court papers say. They say they later learned she had "betrayed their trust and has also engaged in a scheme to hurt the Lowes by spreading malicious lies about each of them."
According to their suit, Boyce conspired with another former family
employee and third parties to "damage the Lowes' reputation." Lowe and his wife, a television and film makeup artist, have been married since July 1991.
