Tour de Los Angeles? New Plan Calls For Bike Paths
New Plan Could Free Up Congestion On Roads And In Arteries
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
City Councilman Ed Reyes has a plan to make Los Angeles residents do a new kind of triathlon. Rather than driving-sitting in traffic-being late, we will take the metro-ride a bike-save the planet!
The councilman introduced a motion during the City Council meetin to make the 1st District, which includes Dodger Stadium, Chinatown and MacArthur park, more bicycle-friendly.
"We have the Gold Line and Red Line here. Now, we need to tie in the loose ends by creating a bike network linking people to key spots like work, school, shops and museums. This motion will complement the overall network of infrastructure for public transportation," Reyes said.
City officials were asked to create a plan that includes bike-only roadways, more bike lanes on wide streets and sidewalks, and a public bicycle prgram that would allow Angelenos to rent bikes online or at Metro shops.
"We have made significant headway in adding rail lines, which improve public transportation regionally, and bus lines that enhance it citywide. But we are far behind in providing eco-friendly transportation, such as bicycles, at the neighborhood level. This motion does just that," said Reyes, who also chairs the council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee.
