A couple recovered their sport utility vehicle, which was stolen as they visited Riverside National Cemetery, but it was too late to save their prized pet.
Mary and Craig Michael say they were less than 20 feet from their vehicle when it was stolen with "Rebel" their dog of 16 years inside on Saturday.
They say the Ford Excursion was running to keep the air conditioning on for the wolf-malamute mix when a woman with blond hair got behind the wheel and drove away with a partner driving behind.
Authorities found the vehicle Sunday afternoon, but the thieves has left the dog inside with the windows closed and died in the heat.
Animal control officials had removed the dog by the time the couple arrived at the vehicle.
No suspects have been arrested.
