Power has been restored Saturday to 31,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers who lost service due to extreme weather spawned by a winter storm that moved through the Southland. Storm-related problems Friday night and early Saturday included transformer fires and wires knocked down by falling trees or high winds.
The majority of outages affected customers south of Mulholland Drive, with about one-fourth of the total outages in the San Fernando Valley, according to DWP spokesman Joseph Ramallo.
Most customers experienced interruptions in power for a few hours or less, although some were without power for longer periods, Ramallo said.
At 12:30 p.m., approximately 10,600 customers were affected by power outages. The DWP said it had 60 crews in the field working to restore power to affected customers. The utility supplies power to 1.4 million electric customer accounts, nearly all within the city limits.
About 2,000 or so Southern California Edison customers struggled with power disruptions Saturday due to storm-related outages, the utility reported.
Edison supplies most of the rest of the region with power, and said 115,000 customers were affected by the storm at one time or another.
In Orange County, 400 Edison customers were without service at midday, out of the approximately 21,000 who were affected by the storm.
Edison prioritizes service restoration on the basis of customers who have been without power the longest, spokesman Gil Alexander said.
According to Ramallo, DWP workers were repairing outages in the following areas, as of 12:30 p.m.:
· Mid-City, 1,581 customers;
· Koreatown, 562 customers;
· Wilmington, 1,350 customers;
· South LA, 2,005 customers;
· Sherman Oaks, 104 customers;
· Encino, 639 customers;
· Beverly Glen, 372 customers;
· Brentwood, 295 customers;
· Westwood, where 1,001 customers were effected.
In addition, Ramallo said there are 17 scattered outages affecting smaller groups of customers in various neighborhoods.
