A bomb squad has determined that a military shell unearthed at the Port of Los Angeles is not explosive.
Port spokeswoman Lori Kelman says construction crews discovered the shell Monday while excavating at Cabrillo Marina.
The workers and about 20 people who live around the marina were evacuated until the bomb squad found that the shell had no explosive core.
The shell, which was unearthed near Berth 49 off Miner Street, did not affect port operations, she said.
Kelman says the shell's origin has yet to be determined.
Part of the port used to be Fort MacArthur, an Army post that was active between 1914 and 1974.
