Woman Who Registered Most Voters Dies At 91
Sylvia Levin Is Credited With Bringing 47,000 To The Polls
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
The woman credited with bringing more than 47,000 voters to the polls in California has died.
Sylvia Levin, of Santa Monica, was 91.
Levin is believed to have set a record nationally for signing up the most voters in her lifetime.
She started registering people in 1973.
Former White House senior staffer Robert Weiner, a close family friend, said he recently accompanied Levin as she registered voters.
He said, "She was a model of love and passion for our country and for improving it, sitting at her table registering more voters than anyone in California history, maybe even U.S. history, right through the age of almost 92."
In 2007, Levin said, "It helps when eligible citizens become voters. No matter what the issues are -- such as the environment, the war in Iraq, Social Security, health care -- citizens are involved. You keep the power to vote forever."
