Unpaid police furloughs have been ordered by San Bernardino leaders in an effort to close a $9 million budget gap.
The City Council's 4-1 vote on Thursday orders 10 percent pay cuts for officers so the city can avoid police layoffs.
Mayor Pat Morris says it's the best of a list of bad choices to plug a $9 million gap in the city's $150 million general fund budget. Furloughs, he says, avoid layoffs in the Police Department.
Police union president Rich Lawhead says furloughs are a contract violation and the union will sue. Lawhead said the furloughs decrease the average officer's workday by an hour.
