At Least 4 Hurt In Police Chase In Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD (CBS) ― At least four traffic collisions occurred during the fast-paced police pursuit of a suspected reckless driver from South Los Angeles into Hollywood and Silver Lake Sunday.

Police said at least four bystanders were injured in four separate collisions during the chase in the Hollywood area. Pedestrians were reportedly jumping out of the way as the pursuit lasted more than a half hour.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street station in
South Los Angeles began chasing a reckless driver on the city's south side at about 9:30 a.m., according to LAPD Sgt. A. Gomez.

The chase led west, through the city's Southwest Division, and then north through Koreatown into Hollywood.

After at least 8 miles of chase, the primary pursuing police car crashed into the suspect's vehicle, and at least three bystanders were struck at St. Andrews Place and Oakwood Avenue. Those three people were taken to a hospital with injury complaints, Gomez said, but the extent of their injuries was not known.

The chase kept going, and two other crashes took place before the suspect finally crashed a fourth time, into a vehicle at Santa Monica Boulevard and Virgil Avenue, according to Gomez. One person inside the vehicle that was struck was injured, but again the extent of that person's injuries was not known, Gomez said.

The man pursued was driving alone. His identity was withheld, but he was
arrested on charges of felony evading.

Additional charges, including felony hit and run, are also being considered, police said.
