A helicopter search has been called off in the waters off Newport Beach Monday for a paraglider who was reported -- but not confirmed -- to be missing.
A group of surfers had reported seeing a paraglider go down about 5 p.m. Sunday in the Pacific Ocean one mile west of 36th Street in Newport Beach, said Danny Tahee, a civilian member of the U.S. Coast Guard's search and rescue team.
Rescue boats were launched immediately, along with helicopters from the Huntington Beach Police Department and U.S. Coast Guard, but no find was reported, he said.
Deputies say the surfers didn't see the impact of the crash and may have instead seen an aeronautical maneuver or trick. There were no active missing persons' investigations.
After multiple helicopters and boats searched the area, nothing was found.
