Animal Control Officer Attacked By 2 Pitbulls

BELL GARDENS, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities say an animal control officer is recovering from an attack by two pitbulls that almost tore her thumb off.

Captain Aaron Reyes of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority says Officer Martha Muro was checking on a sanitation complaint at a home when the two dogs, which were tied to a fence, got loose and charged at her.

Muro fled from the fenced in yard, but the dogs forced their way through a hole and one of them bit the 26-year-old officer.

Muro tried to fend off the dog by striking him with her baton, but was knocked to the ground, Reyes said.

Both dogs were confiscated, and the dog that bit Muro was euthanized.
