110 Freeway Reopens After Sinkhole Is Fixed
SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (CBS) ―
All lanes of the northbound 110 Freeway reopened after being closed most of the day Thursday because of a sinkhole.
The sinkhole engulfed two of the 110's three lanes. All lanes of the freeway were reopened by 7:40 p.m.
The California Department of Transportation says the problem began at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the report of a large pothole near the center divider north of Fair Oaks Avenue.
But the hole spread across the left and center northbound lanes, and a full closure was ordered at 1:40 a.m. Thursday.
CalTrans crews replaced a 26-foot piece of underground pipe and re-paved the roadway Thursday afternoon. Workers believe a corroded, leaking pipe, about 30-inch in diameter, caused the road to cave in.
The cost of the repairs nears $170,000.
