OC Board Approves Furlough Plan To Trim Budget
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ―
Orange County supervisors have approved a furlough plan that would require more than 4,000 workers in the social service department to take two weeks of unpaid leave in the coming year.
The board approved the plan Tuesday as part of its effort to cut $32 million from the budget to cope with less state money for social services and health care programs.
Union officials have questioned why the county is making cuts while it sits on $300 million in reserves and rewards managers with expensive perks.
County CEO Tom Mauk says administrative managers have stepped up by voting to defer a 2 percent raise.
Supervisors also criticized an expensive remodeling of the lobby outside their chamber at the Hall of Administration.
