Long Beach Robbery Suspect Shot By Police

1 Of 2 Alleged Accomplices Also Arrested

LONG BEACH, Calif. (CBS) ― A suspect who allegedly robbed a Long Beach grocery store at gunpoint Monday was shot and wounded by police, who later arrested one of his two accomplices, authorities said.

The robbery occurred in the 2100 block of East South Street about 12:30 a.m., Long Beach police Sgt. David Marander said.

The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive, Marander said. A second suspect was arrested shortly before 6 a.m. It was not immediately known if the suspects, who are males, are adults or juveniles, Marander said. Their names were not immediately released.

Officers who received a 911 call that armed suspects had robbed a grocery store saw a dark-colored sedan westbound on South Street with its headlights turned off and began following it, Marander said.

At Poinsettia Avenue, the car stopped and two suspects got out and ran away, Marander said. The officers began running after them and a third suspect drove away in the suspects' car, he said.

A few minutes later, an officer shot one of the suspects in the upper body in the 2200 block of Poinsettia Avenue, Marander said. A handgun was recovered nearby, he said.

Police searched the neighborhood, and shortly before 6 a.m. SWAT officers arrested a suspect who was hiding in a garage in the 2100 block of East 64th Street, Marander said.

The search was continuing for the third suspect who drove off. The shooting will be investigated by the police department's homicide detectives, which is routine in a police shooting, Marander said.

No one was injured in the armed robbery, Marander said.
