California's nursing board allowed dozens of nurses to operate for years with criminal convictions in their histories before yanking or restricting their licenses.
Results of the investigation reported Saturday in the Los Angeles Times found that about 115 nurses were flagged by the state agency only after they racked up three or more criminal convictions.
The joint investigation by the Times and the ProPublica nonprofit news organization discovered that at least 24 of the nurses had five or more convictions.
Nursing board assistant executive director Heidi Goodman says the agency is taking the findings seriously but could not say why individual cases were missed.
