LAPD: Man Killed Girlfriend, 16, In Murder-Suicide

Man Dies Day After Suspected Suicide Attempt

LINCOLN HEIGHTS, Calif. (CBS) ― Police say a 20-year-old Los Angeles man who investigators believe shot his teenage girlfriend has died at a hospital after shooting himself in the chest.

Police spokesman Officer Gregory Baek said Saturday that Juan Carlos Mendez shot 16-year-old girlfriend Maria Valderrama in the back of the head Friday night after an argument in their apartment in Lincoln Heights, located northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Baek says Mendez initially fled but stopped about a block away and shot himself.

Police found him wounded in an alley and took him to County-USC medical center where he was declared dead later Friday night.

Baek says the pair had been dating for about two years.
