Officer Wounded, Suspect Critical After Shootout

MONROVIA, Calif. A Monrovia police officer and a gunman exchanged gunfire Sunday morning and both were wounded, a Monrovia lieutenant said.

The officer was listed in good condition, while the suspect was listed as stable.

The officer-involved shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at Mayflower Avenue and Duarte Road, said the lieutenant, who asked not to be named.

Officers were called to the scene in the 500 block of West Duarte Road at 12:13 a.m., looking for someone they believed was breaking into vehicles, sheriff's Lt. Larry Lincoln reported.

An officer found a "suspicious person," and attempted to question him.  The person ran and Monrovia police cordoned off the area to search for him.

The suspect was seen a short time later by officers.  When they attempted to apprehend him, the suspect pulled out a small caliber handgun and reportedly opened fire on officers.

The officer was wounded, and police returned fire, hitting the suspect several times in the chest.

The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene.
