A drunken driver rear-ended a minivan at a red light, killing a woman in the backseat of the minivan and injuring three children, a sheriff's sergeant said on Monday.
Cecilio S. Moreno, 69, of Mecca, who was driving a Ford Tempo was booked in the fatal wreck reported at 8:43 p.m. Sunday at Grapefruit Boulevard and Avenue 52, but the name of the fatally injured 36-year-old woman was withheld, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Armando Munoz.
Moreno, held on $500,000 bail in Indio, was booked on suspicion of drunken driving, vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license, authorities said.
A family of five from Thermal were in the minivan, which was stopped behind a tractor-trailer, when the Ford Tempo struck it, Munoz said.
The woman who died was thrown from the minivan, Munoz said.
A 42-year-old man driving the minivan declined medical attention, Munoz said. The three children in the van were taken to a hospital to be checked out, but no information was made available about their conditions.
A passenger in the Ford was treated for chest and neck injuries and released, Munoz said.
