Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona -- the target of a federal corruption case -- announced his retirement Monday to focus on defending himself against the charges.
A message posted on a Sheriff's Department Web site reads, "With a heavy heart, I therefore announce my retirement as sheriff, effective today."
His attorney has confirmed the statement.
Fifty-two-year-old Carona initially announced he was taking 60 days of paid leave on November 9th, shortly after he, his wife Deborah, and his alleged mistress were indicted in a federal corruption case.
The indictment alleges the sheriff took nearly $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks. His wife is charged with one count of conspiracy and his mistress, Debra Hoffman, one count of conspiracy, four counts of mail fraud and three counts of bankruptcy fraud.
