A Southern California transit official says an engineer on a Metrolink train has been suspended for sending a text message from his cell phone at about the same time another commuter train was involved in a deadly collision seconds after its engineer sent someone a text message.
Metrolink board member Richard Katz said Wednesday that the National Transportation Safety Board informed his agency that the engineer had been texting and had been suspended. The engineer has not been identified.
Katz said Metrolink officials don't know who the engineer was texting.
The NTSB has revealed that Robert Sanchez, engineer of the Metrolink train that slammed into a freight train on Sept. 12 in suburban Los Angeles, was texting while on duty. Sanchez and 24 others were killed.
Records show Sanchez sent a text just 22 seconds before the crash.
