Blazing Fire Destroys South LA Market

LOS ANGELES A stubborn blaze destroyed a South Los Angeles market on Thursday, but there were no injuries, authorities said.

The fire at Park's Super Market at 9149 S. Western Ave. was reported just after 3:50 a.m., and 100 firefighters doused the flames roughly 90 minutes later, Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said.

When firefighters arrived, they moved inside to attack the fire, but as it burgeoned, sending flames through the roof, they retreated and assumed a defensive position, battling the blaze from the exterior as parts of the building's roof and walls collapsed, Myers said.

The market was destroyed, but firefighters were able to save adjacent businesses, he said, adding that no one was injured.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
