Stolen Car Suspect Evades Police In Marina Del Rey

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (CBS) ― A stolen car suspect evaded police, who searched boat-to-boat in Marina del Rey after a short vehicle chase Monday evening, a police lieutenant said.

The pursuit began when Culver City police attempted to stop a motorist for a vehicle code violation at Washington and Lincoln boulevards shortly after 8:30 p.m. and ended about 15 minutes later near the end of Admiralty Way, not far from Fisherman's Village in Marina del Rey, said Lt. Dave Tankenson of the Culver City Police Department.

The driver of the 2001 Mitsubishi, which had been reported stolen in Playa del Rey earlier Monday, escaped, and a perimeter was set up to find him, Tankenson said.

He was described as a man in his early 20s, Tankenson said.

Authorities went boat-to-boat with a search dog, a law enforcement boat in the water and a chopper overhead, according to a witness at the scene. Sheriff's deputies were searching the boats on a dock off Tahiti Way, the witness said.

The search was called off about 10:15 p.m., but police obtained information possibly identifying the suspect and his likely whereabouts, Tankenson said.
