Man Fatally Struck By Train Near Cabazon

CABAZON, Calif. A male pedestrian died early Saturday after he was struck by a train on Union Pacific railroad tracks in the San Gorgonio Pass, according to the Riverside County sheriff's officials.

The man was struck by a train at 1:50 a.m. Saturday on Union Pacific tracks, coroner's officials said. David Leal Martinez, 44, of Riverside, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:23 a.m.

A Union Pacific employee spotted the body between railroad tracks that parallel Railroad Avenue east of Main Street in Cabazon, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Baeckel.

Eastbound and westbound trains were delayed during the death investigation, according to Baeckel. The tracks were re-opened for normal use this morning.

Cabazon is about seven miles west of Whitewater, where coroner's officials initially reported the death occurred. Both sparsely-populated, unincorporated communities are in the San Gorgonio Pass northwest of Palm Springs, a primary freight transportation corridor.
