Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo said he takes responsibility for a 2004 accident in which his wife damaged a city-owned vehicle while driving with a suspended license.
Delgadillo told reporters at a news conference Monday afternoon that he realizes he should have spoken up earlier. He said, "That was a mistake." He says he mishandled the situation and he apologizes.
Delgadillo's wife's license had been suspended from July 2004 to March 2007 after she was involved in an accident and could not show proof of insurance.
Delgadillo said neither he nor his wife realized her license had been suspended at the time of the accident.
According to broadcast reports Delgadillo said that he's reimbursing the city for repairs to the vehicle.
Earlier this month, Delgadillo filed a petition questioning whether Sheriff Lee Baca should be held in contempt of court for abruptly releasing Paris Hilton from jail early. Hilton was sentenced after failing a sobriety test and violating her probation twice by driving on a suspended license.
