A 17-year-old Long Beach Polytechnic High School student is facing felony vandalism charges for allegedly breaking into the school and smashing trophies and artifacts, including an expensive crystal vase and a Grammy Award, it was reported Thursday.
"The kids were just heartbroken," Poly Principal Shawn Ashley told the Press-Telegram. "You can't put a value on these things."
The vandalism was discovered Wednesday morning.
The suspect was spotted by a staffer who arrived at the Administration Building about 5 a.m., but the 17-year-old boy, who has a history of emotional problems, got away, Ashley said.
Among the damage was a smashed trophy case and graffiti nearby containing the suspect's nickname, the newspaper reported. When the student showed up for classes later, he was arrested, police said.
"When we pulled him aside and asked him about it, he admitted the whole thing," the principal said, adding that boy said he hears voices and has delusions. "He needs to get serious emotional and psychological help more than anything."
The youth was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and burglary and
is expected to be charged in Juvenile Court.
He will not return to Long Beach Poly and likely will not be able to continue in the Long Beach Unified School District, Ashley said.
