Sewage Spill Shuts Down Long Beach Beaches

LONG BEACH, Calif. (CBS) ― Mother's Beach and Marine Stadium were closed to swimmers after pressurized sewage line broke in Long Beach, officials said.

The line was being cleared of roots by the city's water department when the spill happened around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday night, according to Dr. Clarke Lew, acting city health officer.

Approximately 5,400 gallons of sewage were emitted, spilling into Marine Stadium at its northern end. The discharge was contained and the area around the spill cleaned and sanitized.

Swimmers are being advised not to enter the water until bacteria levels are within state standards, Lew said.

More information on the closures is available by calling the Water Quality Information Line at (562) 570-4199 or online at www.longbeach.gov.
