Locksmith Allegedly Steals Vending Machine Money

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A locksmith from Van Nuys, who allegedly posed as a Coca-Cola Co. representative, was in custody, police said Thursday.

Jay Ybarra is accused of stealing money from vending machines.

Police said Ybarra allegedly went to a business in the 6500 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard on Oct. 13, wearing a baseball cap and jacket with Coca-Cola Co. logos.

"Without raising suspicions because of his appearance, he proceeded to open a vending machine with a key and transfer money from the machine into a bag," police said. "Afterward, the suspect secured the machine and left in his van."

LAPD detectives and a Coca-Cola field security manager worked together on the investigation.

Details from business personnel, who had questioned Ybarra when he allegedly attempted to access a vending machine on Oct. 30, led to his arrest, according to police.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested Monday and held on $120,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in Van Nuys Superior Court on Nov. 12.
