Sea Lions Released Into Wild After Recovery

SAN PEDRO (CBS) ― Caretakers from the Marine Mammal Care Center in Fort MacArthur were happy, yet sad, to see their five charges go off on their own Sunday. These five charges happened to be sea lions who were released into the ocean near San Pedro after having been nursed back to health.

Staff members and volunteers were especially happy with the progress of one of the sea lions that had gone through two eye surgeries.

"He's doing just fine," said Dr. Doug Esson, a veterinarian for Eye Care for Animals. "He's visual, he's comfortable, and that eye should serve him in the years ahead of him. Out in the wild he should have no problem hunting, fishing, staying away from predators and those kinds of things."

The sea lion weighed 37 pounds when he was taken to the care center and gained nearly 60 pounds before being released.
