Santa Ana Wind Causes Record Heat In Downtown L.A.
LOS ANGELES (CBS) ―
Monday was the hottest Nov. 6 in more than 100 years in downtown Los Angeles, and new records were also reached in other parts of the Southland, according to the National Weather Service.
The mercury in downtown Los Angeles hit 95 degrees about 1 p.m., breaking the record of 92 degrees set for this day in 1898, Stuart Seto of the National Weather Service said.
At Los Angeles International Airport, the mercury hit 91 around noon, breaking the record of 90 degrees set on Nov. 6, 1930, Seto said.
In Long Beach, it was 93 degrees as of 2 p.m., breaking the record 86-degree temperature for this day set in 1961.
UCLA in Westwood also had record heat, hitting 90 degrees by 1 p.m., breaking the 1991 record of 88 degrees.
"Basically it's caused by Santa Ana winds pushing," Seto said. "The coastal areas are a little warmer than the valley areas. It is a little unusual."
