Killed Motorcyclist's Family Gets $1.15 Million

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted on Wednesday to pay $1.15 million to the family of a Glendale man who was killed when his motorcycle hit a car driven by a Los Angeles city employee.

Mgrdich Hovsep Fidanian, 26, was riding southbound on Barham Boulevard near Universal City on Oct. 13, 2005, when he was struck by a car making a left turn into the driveway of a liquor store, according to police and a lawsuit filed by Fidanian's parents and siblings.

The driver of that car was an employee with the city Office of Finance, who used his vehicle as a "city mileage vehicle" and was driving the car within the scope of his employment with the city, according to the lawsuit.

The Fidanians also claimed the city should have known Barham Boulevard was a dangerous roadway because of trees, signs and elevation changes in the area around the accident site. The road also had a posted speed limit that was excessive for the area, the lawsuit claimed.

Fidanian was driving over the brow of the hill at the top of Barham Boulevard and through two sets of traffic lights.
