L.A. Mayor Meets With Business Leaders, NFL

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is meeting Wednesday night with leaders of the Los Angeles business community and an NFL delegation led by commissioner Paul Tagliabue to discuss the possible return of NFL football to the area.

Villaraigosa says the city is "farther along than we have been at any time since professional football left Los Angeles.

The greater Los Angeles area has been without an NFL team since the Raiders left for Oakland and the Rams left for St. Louis before the 1995 season.

The NFL group will meet with Anaheim officials for lunch Thursday.

Los Angeles officials are hoping to build an $800 million stadium inside the Coliseum and lease it to the league. Anaheim officials want to build a new football stadium in the parking lot next to Angel Stadium.
