Evading Cops, 9 Illegal Aliens Hurt In Fiery Crash

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) ― Nine suspected illegal immigrants were injured Tuesday when the car they were fleeing sheriff's deputies in rolled
down an embankment and burst into flames, sparking a small brush fire.

San Diego Sheriff's Sergeant Marco Garmo says deputies tried to stop a 2000 Dodge Intrepid for a routine traffic violation around10:40 am when the driver sped away.

Deputies gave chase at speeds reaching 70 mph, but called off the pursuit when the car reached a residential area in the eastern part of the city.

The car was later seen careering off the roadway and rolling down an embankment into a field of dry grass, where it landed upside down and caught fire.

Deputies pulled nine people clear of the wreckage, including a young woman who was riding in the trunk. Garmo said she needed to be resuscitated and was in critical condition.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The driver faces felony evading charges.
