Pasadena Police Officer Dies While Jogging

PASADENA, Calif. (CBS) ― A nine-year veteran of the Pasadena Police Department died Friday morning of a heart attack while jogging with his fellow police officers at the Rose Bowl.

Kyle Ballard, 30, collapsed after running two laps around the stadium, as part of his training for the annual Baker to Vegas relay race, an event he had participated in several times, Pasadena Police Commander Christopher Vicino said.

After running his two laps, Ballard veered away from the other officers before collapsing.

Ballard's fellow officers and paramedics who were at the scene tried to revive him at the scene. He was rushed to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he died at 11:06 a.m., about an hour after he collapsed.

Ballard, a Cal Poly Pomona graduate with a degree in criminology, began working for the Pasadena Police Department on Aug. 10, 1998. He worked in patrol, special enforcement and the special operations sections.

Ballard is survived by his wife Laurie and three young sons, Ethan, 3, Andrew, 2, and Owen, 6 months.
