Authorities were on the lookout Monday for a pack of mountain lions that apparently attacked a mare that was giving birth on an Acton ranch, a sheriff's lieutenant said.
The pregnant horse was attacked Saturday night.
Authorities found mountain lion tracks and a trail of blood at the scene, said Lt. Paul Clay of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Palmdale Station.
"We found her (Sunday) morning," ranch owner Gary Jensen told KCAL9.
"We called the vet and he couldn't save her. We had to put her down. The baby was also inside."
"I would say it looked like four or five animals in there after her," ranch caretaker Earl Williams told the TV station.
The Department of Fish & Game is handling the incident.
