Thunderstorms Bring Lightning To Region

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― Booming thunderclaps and lightning flashes dancing across Southern California surprised residents as a summer storm rumbled through the region, drenching some areas in rain.

Downpours briefly soaks areas of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties before dawn Friday and roadways are slick as the morning commuter rush kicks off.

The National Weather Service says three thunderstorms began forming between Santa Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes Peninsula around midnight and they began moving along the coast.

Weather service lightning sensors detected 445 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes from midnight to 3 a.m. in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
