Striking LAX Workers Back On The Job
LOS ANGELES (AP) ―
Hundreds of airline service workers are back on the job at Los Angeles International Airport a day after going on a strike that threatened to inconvenience airline passengers throughout the Labor Day weekend.
Union spokesman Mike Chavez says the workers went back to work
Friday after Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa brokered a three-week cooling off period when negotiations will continue.
Roughly 2,500 skycaps, janitors, wheelchair attendants and other
service workers are represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1871.
For more than two months, the union held talks with companies that contract with major airlines for baggage handling, cleaning aircraft cabins and terminals, security and other services.
Union leaders called for the walkout Thursday after contract talks broke down.
The airport reported no disruptions as nonunion workers filled in.
