2 Dead, 3 Injured In Laurel Canyon Crash

LOS ANGELES A sport utility vehicle went off a road in the Hollywood HiIls on Monday, fatally injuring a man in his 70s and a woman in her 20s as it careened down a hill, overturned and came to rest against a carport, authorities said.

The vehicle apparently went off the 8900 block of Crescent Drive and landed in the yard at 8711 Duncamp Place, which is in the Laurel Canyon area off Lookout Mountain Avenue.

Two people were thrown from the vehicle, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who confirmed the two fatalities. The man died at the scene, and the woman was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, he said.

Their names were withheld.

A 44-year-old woman and 27-year-old male were taken to the Cedars, as well, Humphrey said, but their names and conditions were unavailable.

A boy about 2 years old was put on a "papoose" C-spine brace and taken to a hospital, but he was reportedly in a safety seat during the crash and not believed to be seriously injured.

It was unclear why the driver lost control of the car. Los Angeles police with the West Traffic Division will be in charge of the investigation.
