24 Percent Of Calif. High School Students Drop Out

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The state Department of Education says more than 24 percent of California public high school students dropped out in the 2006-2007 school year.

The figures released Wednesday are the first compiled from a newly implemented tracking system that issues each student an identifier number, which enables officials to monitor each student's progress.

According to the figures, 67.6 percent of students graduated, 24.2 percent dropped out, and 8.2 percent completed high school equivalency diplomas, moved out of state or transferred to private schools.
