Cops Hunt Fourth Suspect In Glassell Park Shooting

LOS ANGELES Police searched Friday for the remaining suspect in Thursday's fatal drive-by attack that triggered a shootout between gang members and police officers in the Glassell Park area.  One of the four gunman was killed, one was shot and is hospitalized and one was jailed.

"The suspect who left the scene is still being sought," LAPD Officer April Harding said early Friday morning.

The incident began just before noon Thursday when a man was killed during a drive-by shooting as he was walking down the street, LAPD Assistant Chief Jim McDonald told reporters.

"At that location, there was a man walking down the street carrying a 2- year-old child. The suspects in this vehicle drove by,...shot the victim in this case a number of times. The victim went down at the scene, dropped the baby. Someone else came along and picked up the baby," McDonald said.

The child, who was not shot, was hospitalized with injuries from being dropped.

The 37-year-old drive-by shooting victim was described by police as a bystander. His identity was not immediately released.

"The vehicle then left that area and went around the corner and engaged in a shooting with another vehicle. We are still looking for further information on that shooting," McDonald said.

A short time later, police attempted to stop the suspect vehicle -- a white Nissan sedan -- about 10 blocks away from the drive-by attack.

During the pursuit, a gunbattle between police and the suspects broke out shortly after noon at Estara Avenue and Drew Street when three gunmen came out of the car and opened fire on the police, said Los Angeles police Officer Kate Lopez.

"At least two of them fired at the officers, possibly three fired at the officers," Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz said. "The officers fired back, striking two of the suspects."

One of the suspects -- Daniel Ivan Leon, 22, of Victorville -- died at the scene, Lt. Larry Dietz of the coroner's office said.

The fourth suspect, the vehicle's driver, fled from the scene.

No officers were injured during the shootout, Lopez said.
