Officials say a wildfire that brought an early morning scare to residents of the foothills of San Bernardino County was caused by fireworks.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department cited the cause Wednesday afternoon in a recorded update.
The blaze has grown to 250 acres but hot, dry Santa Ana winds have pushed the flames away from homes. Authorities say the fire is 60 percent contained. Flames are no longer evident in TV news helicopter views from overhead.
A county fire spokeswoman says the fire began near Fontana, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, at about 12:45 a.m.
Winds over 30 mph pushed it west into the mountains and canyons of Rancho Cucamonga.
People in about 100 homes near a Buddhist temple were told they may want to evacuate but were not ordered to do so.
Firefighters have quickly jumped on other small brush blazes in the region.
