5 Murders Kept L.A. Coroner's Office Busy Sunday

Beyond the time and location of each of the incidents and the injuries suffered, officials did not provide any further information, indicating that Sheriff's homicide detectives were actively investigating.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and coroner's office personnel kept busy Sunday as at least five people were murdered in sheriff's patrol areas in the south and southeast parts of the county in the last 24 hours, according to official reports.
Shooting deaths of unidentified men included two in Pico Rivera, one in Whittier, one in Athens, and one in Hawaiian Gardens.
Authorities identified three of five people who were killed in a four-hour period in the county starting on Saturday night.
The first of the slayings occurred about 12:25 p.m. Saturday in Hawaiian
Gardens, when a man was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of a Food4Less market in the 12200 block of Carson Street. His name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
About 10:45 p.m. Saturday in Pico Rivera, two people were fatally shot
in the 3900 block of Aleman Avenue, the sheriff's department reported. John Schula, 30, of Montebello, died at the scene, and Manuel Torres, 17, of La Puente, died at a hospital, said Ed Winter of the coroner's office.
About 12:20 a.m. Sunday in Whittier, 20-year-old Juan Duarte, 20 was
gunned down in the 10900 block of Carmenita Road, Winter said. He died at the scene.
Identification of the other victims by the coroner's office is still underway.
