A fire in a microwave oven on the 32nd floor of a 38-story apartment building near downtown triggered the sprinkler system early Saturday, and some residents evacuated themselves.
A 19-year-old woman who breathed some smoke was taken to a hospital to be checked out, and damage to the unit and its contents was put at $70,000, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The fire at 1100 Wilshire Blvd. was reported at 5:27 a.m. via an alarm, he said.
Arriving firefighters reported occupants "streaming down the stairwell," Humphrey said, and thick smoke on the 32nd floor.
The sprinkler system held the fire in check, he said, adding that "once again, a residential fire sprinkler saved the day."
Firefighters used vacuums to suck up some of the water, but damage was reported in the unit where the fire started, in the hall and on the 31st floor, he said.
